Looking Back: Surface Magazine at Art Basel Miami Beach 2015


During Art Basel Miami Beach 2015, Surface hosted seven events throughout the week. The events ranged from VIP dinners, to private lunches, to several Design Dialogues featuring talent such as Alex Israel, Bret Easton Ellis, Amar'e Stoudemire, Robbie Antonio, Jean Pigozzi, and Simon de Pury.  Watch all the videos below for an exclusive peek into the week.

SURFACE DINNER HONORING JORGE M. PÉREZ

On Nov. 30, Surface hosted a VIP dinner at the Pérez Art Museum Miami honoring Jorge M. Pérez with a special performance by members of the Miami Symphony Orchestra and a concert by Wyclef Jean. The tablescape for the 125-person dinner, inspired by Girard-Perregaux’s Neo-Tourbillon, was designed by Aranda Lasch in collaboration with Neal Feay. Guests included Mario Testino, Barry Sternlicht, John Pawson, Chad Oppenheim, Deyan Sudjic, Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine, José Andrés, Robbie Antonio, and more.

SURFACE COLLECTORS LATE LUNCH

In the afternoon on Dec. 1, Surface and The Alexander Team co-hosted a late lunch at a private residence in Bal Harbour, designed by Chad Oppenheim, in honor of the patrons and collectors featured in our Dec./Jan. Art Issue. Attendees included Amar’e Stoudemire, Maja Hoffmann, Chad and Illona Oppenheim, Carlos Mota, Howard Lorber, Gigi Kracht, Alex Blavatnik, Michael Shvo, Luiz Ortiz, Robert Norton, Benny and Stacey Shabtai, Richard and Eloidie Taittinger, and Andrew Zuckerman.

SURFACE AND W SOUTH BEACH HOTEL AND RESIDENCES PRESENT DESIGN DIALOGUES NO. 23

In the evening on Dec. 1, Surface and W South Beach Hotel and Residences co-hosted Design Dialogues No. 23. Editor-in-chief Spencer Bailey moderated a conversation between professional basketball player Amar'e Stoudemire and developer and art collector Robbie Antonio. Stoudemire and Antonio discussed educating themselves about art, their respective collecting philosophies, and the connection between fashion and art.

SURFACE, 1 HOTEL SOUTH BEACH, AND FORYOURART PRESENT DESIGN DIALOGUES NO. 24

On Dec. 3, Surface, 1 Hotel & Homes South Beach, and For Your Art co-hosted Design Dialogues No. 24, featuring artist Alex Israel and novelist Bret Easton Ellis. The talk, which was moderated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, took place in the penthouse of 1 Hotel South Beach. Israel and Easton Ellis discussed growing up in Los Angeles, their various influences, and announced a collaborative art project that will be unveiled at Gagosian Gallery Los Angeles in February.

SURFACE AND SOHO BEACH HOUSE PRESENT DESIGN DIALOGUES NO. 25

On Dec. 4, Surface and Soho Beach House co-hosted Design Dialogues No. 25 featuring auctioneer and art collector Simon de Pury and art collector and venture capitalist Jean Pigozzi. The talk, which took place in Soho Beach House’s tent on the beach, was moderated by Surface editor-in-chief Spencer Bailey. Pigozzi and de Pury discussed their philosophies on collecting, the intricacies of the art market, and more.

SURFACE, GOODREADS, AND SOHO BEACH HOUSE PRESENT AN INFORMAL Q + A WITH BRET EASTON ELLIS

On Dec. 4, Surface, Goodreads, For Your Art, and Soho Beach House co-hosted an informal Q&A with novelist Bret Easton Ellis in the library of Soho Beach House. Easton Ellis answered questions about American Psycho, discussed influences throughout his life, and talked about his future as a writer.

SURFACE AND W SOUTH BEACH HOTEL AND RESIDENCES PRESENT THE PARTY

On Dec. 4, Surface and W South Beach Hotel and Residences co-hosted The Party. Guests arrived to a pop-up Myumi sushi bar presented by Wine ‘N Dine, then gathered in the Great Room for cocktails and a DJ set by Sam French. Guests included Lenny Kravitz, Bret Easton Ellis, Alex Israel, Bettina Korek, Julian Lennon, China Chow, Almine Rech, Bernard Picasso, David Adjaye, Robbie Antonio, Francesco Vezzoli, Simon Castets, Sarah Arison, Rene Gonzalez, and more.
