DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Nathalie Schreckenberg

Inspired by the beauty of imperfection, simplicity, and organic shapes, the German-Brazilian designer Nathalie Schreckenberg carefully handcrafts sculptural ergonomic jewelry using recycled sterling silver. The Barcelona local now debuts a collection of sinuous hand-blown glass vases—an ideal material to crystallize and deepen the ideas her jewelry explores—that mimic the fleeting, ethereal forms of water.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: My favorite piece so far is the Maré bracelet, a simple articulated bracelet that’s pure structure and has a very organic and smooth feeling. I’ve been wearing mine everyday since I made it.

Describe the problem your work solves: Not sure if I’m solving any problems, but jewelry is very symbolic for the wearer. They’re often special gifts to the self, marking special occasions and may become heirlooms for many years to come. I love the powerful emotion attached to jewelry.

Describe the project you are working on now: We’re working on launching our first glass homeware collection. It’s my first collaboration using a different material other than metal, as well as designing home decor. It’s a very exciting project for me—I learned a lot during the process of working together with local glassblowers on these pieces. Our three home decor designs—two vases and one jewelry plate—have just launched exclusively at Fivestory NYC.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: I’m working on an upcoming jewelry collection that launches in a few months.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: I love to listen to the Do You Breakfast show on NTS every morning. It’s an instant mood lifter. And lots of tea!

What you do when you’re not working: Ride my bike, read, cook, and watch movies.

Sources of creative envy: Alexandre Noll, Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe, Lina Bo Bardi, Burle Marx.

The distraction you want to eliminate: Checking my phone too often.

Concrete or marble? Concrete. I grew up in São Paulo, famous for its brutalist concrete architecture. I’ve been obsessed with it ever since I can remember.

High-rise or townhouse? Townhouse.

Remember or forget? Remember.

Aliens or ghosts? Aliens.

Dark or light? Light.
