Behind the Scenes

Sketchbook: Benjamin S. Koren

A glimpse at computational geometry (and the Elbphilharmonie concert hall) by way of illustration.

Koren’s drawing for the acoustic paneling he designed and engineered for the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany. Once perfected on paper, he translated the sketch into computer code, and eventually into a physical form. Photo: Lily Wan.

“I remember specifically in Germany [where I’m from], I couldn’t find the right-sized notebook to fit between myself and my laptop. So, what I did was cut a longer notebook in half with a saw. But I did find here, in the States, a nice long one with the binder on the short side, which you can see in the photograph.”
