This year, Surface is reintroducing the magazine’s famed Avant Guardian photography contest, a showcase of the top up-and-coming photographers in the following categories: Fashion, Architecture, Portraiture, Fine Art, and Technical/Still Life.
The contest has helped launch the careers of many celebrated talents. Past Avant Guardian winners frequently appear in the pages of Surface, and have gone on to shoot campaigns and promotions for Giorgio Armani, Hermès, Banana Republic, Nike, IBM, and Levi’s. Winners have included Nicholas Duers, KT Auleta, Sarah Silver, Joshua Jordan, Mark Veltman, and Vanina Sorrenti.
Surface editors and a star jury featuring Iwan Baan, Johan Lindeberg, Klitos Teklos (Air Paris), Benoit Lagarde (Splashlight), and Keren Sachs (Offset) will select from this year’s pool the 10 submissions that show the most promise. The finalists and their work will be showcased in our October 2014 issue—alongside our cover story on legendary fashion photographer Mario Testino—and in special exhibitions in New York and in Miami during Art Basel. Complimentary studio time at Splashlight will be available to each of the winners to produce an original shoot for the magazine.
Please note the deadline to submit applications is Thurs., July 24, at 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
Surface accepts photography submissions in the following categories: Fashion, Architecture, Portraiture, Fine Art, and Technical/Still Life. Applications are limited to one entry per person.
