Heat Meister: Rochus Jacob Reimagines the Radiator

Ever wonder what it would be like to have a campfire in your tiny apartment? New York–based designer Rochus Jacob has designed a wigwam-shaped radiator that references how logs are stacked in a fire pit. His idea for the Rethinking the Radiator project started in 2008, when he noticed windows were being made thicker and tighter—and, as a result, more efficient in terms of insulation. If windows could be more efficient, he thought, why not radiators? “It was about liberating the radiator from its space beneath the window,” he says.

The result isn’t just a design that’s mobile and good-looking; it’s also a tool for reigniting humans’ natural emotional connection to heat. And if you’re worried about getting burned, never fear: Jacob designed the unit so that its plastic shell doesn’t get hot. Though currently just a prototype, Jacob says he’s working with manufacturers to create an electric version.
