THE MADRID DESIGN COLLECTIVE DAVIDELFIN IS EQUALLY AT HOME ON A RUNWAY, AT A WINERY OR IN A HOTEL
David Delfín’s fans clearly want to be undressed. What with those tight leathers, sinewy waists, the allure of shine and sheer. Then there are the bare parts—arms, shoulders, legs, sometimes more. Once he dressed a model in only a bikini bottom and men’s necktie running down her décolleté. For a man, he put him in a Speedo and a tuxedo jacket. Because Delfín, even in his sexiest mode, is not without a sense of humor.

Davidelfin, the one-word brand, is named after its designer, but includes model/singer Bimba Bosé as well as musicians, artists and siblings Gorka, Deborah and Diego Postigo, all based in Madrid. “We try to contaminate our individual ideas to make the final project a group production,” says the 39-year-old, self-taught designer. After 10 years headlining fashion weeks in Barcelona and Madrid, the team showed for the first time in New York earlier this year.
Chelsea’s Eyebeam Atelier throbbed with Boléro-esque electronica as the 33-piece collection, titled Revelations, took the runway. First, dresses in folded, gray wool disguised the body, evolving into a pencil skirt that appeared painted on. Matador-style pants with three stacked belts stretched the look of the torso, while wool sweaters were finished off with fringe that fanned the floor. He took each of the ideas—sequins, stripes and leather, too—and created masculine and feminine versions.
However, “if designing consisted only of making pretty clothes, I probably wouldn’t be a designer,” says Delfín. Which explains his embrace of other genres. Davidelfin recently masterminded a bottle for Sonsierra winery, a collection for the Barcelona rug company DAC and the lobby interior for Hotel Finca de Arandinos in Rioja, set to open next year. And his aesthetic has emigrated from Spain, too, including a limited-edition Ford Focus as well as a capsule collection for Converse. “Del fin” translates to “the end” in his native tongue, although it’s obvious Delfín and his prolific team have no plans of stopping. davidelfin.com
