Digital Marketing Director

Surface is looking to bring on a seasoned Digital Marketing Director to create and optimize a successful customer journey experience across all Surface digital platforms, and contribute innovative revenue-driving marketing concepts and packages for both Surface and its partnership clients. This person will have fluency with current marketing technology, strategies, and tools, and will enjoy creating the strategy, executing it, and finding learnings to enhance future performance and product creation. 

Under the direction of the Senior Director of Operations and CCO, the Digital Marketing Director will create retargeting campaigns for a 360 customer journey experience across Surface’s website and social channels, create email marketing campaigns, strategize and produce paid social campaigns (and working closely with the Social Media Producer on internal brand marketing campaigns), and contribute to any relevant sales materials as needed (one sheets, decks, outlines for marketing sites, RFPs).

Job Responsibilities:



  • Develop a strategic retargeting plan across multiple touch points to increase traffic on, optimize the distribution of our editorial content to drive the highest engagement, drive direct sign-ups for our newsletters and other products, and increase overall reach across digital platforms
  • Draft marketing plans for the leadership team to review and approve, inclusive of: launch tactics, promotional strategy & calendar, marketing asset creation, and continuous engagement/analytics reporting
  • Work with the Social Media Producer and Client Services Manager to plan the social strategy for Surface marketing initiatives, working with appropriate team members to create a plan, assist as needed to execute, and provide any materials for post-project needs
  • Assist Client Services team with creating promotional plans/assets for launching new products, verticals, or subscriptions (ie: Design Dose, The List, Surface.Us, Surface Studios projects)
  • Manage post-project reporting – highlighting analytics to share with marketing, executive team and brands/partners for Design Dose, Design Dispatch and all existing Surface projects
  • Contribute to briefs, proposals, decks, and other marketing materials related to brand partnerships, as well as client recaps and post-project needs as needed

Production of Consumer Journey

  • Strategize, execute and manage all automation across Surface platforms (email campaigns, social/web retargeting, etc.) and ensure maximum optimization
  • Manage end to end campaign execution and project management to ensure campaigns are launched flawlessly and on time
  • Build and maintain key internal processes, such as various contact databases in Mailchimp and our CRM database
  • Identify opportunities and generate creative insights for improvement, identify customer needs and tailor solutions accordingly
  • Work cross-functionally to develop brand differentiating customer experiences through multiple channels
  • Seek opportunities to connect with our customer, creating a seamless and personal experience for him/her
  • Provide “above and beyond” service and constantly think about how to improve and innovate
  • Implement different experiments aimed at increasing membership retention
  • Build a strong understanding of client and industry segmentation, behavior and insights to drive customer lifetime value
  • Help develop surveys for customer base and analyze results
  • Lead processes to gain creative approval, ensure the approved creative deploys accurately and timely
  • Define success plans rooted in data, with clear deliverables, for each assigned customer and ensure clear communication across the customer operational areas, ensuring best in class service
  • Proactive coordination between product development and customers - communicating engagement with product features and practical customer use cases ensuring customer satisfaction and product value is achieved
  • Report on Results of Campaigns: Track user feedback to help influence the product roadmap and provide ongoing reporting and visibility to team by closely monitoring each journey in order to identify aspects that can be improved upon
  • Design and create data visualizations for marketing performance data (ex: analytics sheet)
  • Identify risks to renewals with our clients on an ongoing basis and collaborate with internal teams to remediate client concerns and manage escalations
  • Evaluate customer journeys and data signals across the customer lifecycle that will inform audience targeting
  • Activate data through skillful data structuring and use of dashboards and visualization tools
  • Provide customer feedback to engineering and development teams for improved product design and documentation
  • Report on the impact of new customer success initiatives such as measuring proposals to evaluate and refine activity, including test and learn, conversion lift studies and deeper analysis
