• HOUSEWARES & DESIGN OBJECTS

Introducing the home and design edit for our 2020 Gift Guide. What you’ll find inside is an editorially curated mix of objects and housewares that bring us joy, from Alessi’s playful Anna G' bottle opener, complete with corkscrewed arms, to an Italian coffee box by Issimo, the artisanal products offshoot of Tuscany’s famed il Pellicano resort. The world has spent most of the year sequestered at home, and we can’t think of a better way to brighten your mood than Established & Sons’ candy-striped Filigrana Light. Of course, we’ll admit we’re as anxious as everyone else to ditch our athleisure and have a proper night out. Until then, YSL’s black crystal tumblers by Baccarat are worthy of the most decadent cocktail you can make with the ingredients on your bar cart. Happy perusing.

    Hand Carved Porcelain Banana
    $1,500
Katie Ridley Murphy has a hard time throwing away the fruit in her fridge. “When they start to decompose, I think they look so pretty,” the Atlanta-based artist says. Murphy hand-picks one banana and chisels a similar decomposing form out of raw black or white porcelain, usually while holding both simultaneously. In a similar process to making dried fruit, the sculpture is dried out for a week, then fired in the kiln, dipped in a clear glaze, and finally fired for a second time. Accounting for shrinkage in the firing process, Murphy recreates every detail at 20 percent larger than the original specimen, whittling grooves and dents by hand. In total, each takes nine days, give or take, to make.
