The Vera List Center for Art and Politics will open “Rosana Paulino: ¿História Natural?” on October 9 at The New School’s Arnold and Sheila Aronson Galleries at Parsons School of Design. The exhibition, on view through November 1, honors the Brazilian artist as a recipient of the 2025-2027 Jane Lombard Prize for Art and Social Justice and opens after her presentation in Brazil’s pavilion at this year’s Venice Biennale. The show is built around Paulino’s 2016 artist book ¿História Natural?, a foundational work in contemporary Latin American art that confronts the scientific, religious, and political ideas used to justify slavery and colonialism. Designed as a study room, the exhibit presents all 18 folios featured in the book, which layer colonial-era imagery, textile fragments, digital prints with watercolor and charcoal, stained Portuguese tiles, and anatomical sketches, stitched together with red thread. Notebooks and sketches from that period, alongside rarely seen material from her studio, further enhance the experience.
