The Art Students League of New York Celebrates its 150th Anniversary

Founded by artists for artists—in 1875—the Art Students League of New York has been a beacon of affordable arts education for 150 years. In 1920, the institution introduced the Dream Ball benefit as a way to fund scholarships. This year’s spectacular edition, hosted by comedian Murray Hill, welcomed 500 guests into the Art Students League’s historic building on West 57th, where its Vanderbilt Gallery had been transformed into a disco ballroom. Studios, too, became immersive experiences—from a Cabinet de Curiosités with tarot card readings by Gereve to Le Théâtre des Muses, with live sketches by Dane LaChiusa, and magic by Emma Olsen. Burlesque dancers Cassandra Rosebettle and Jack Barrow, and drag performers Miss Perfidia, Creep Suzette, Taylor Poore, and Ava Jean dazzled guests costumed to the theme Le Réve Rococo.
