Designer of the Day: Catherine Fowlkes and VW Fowlkes of Fowlkes Studio

Founded in 2009 by Catherine Fowlkes and VW Fowlkes, the architecture and interiors practice Fowlkes Studio helms residential, retail, and office design projects. On a mission to platform each client's personality, their approach is one of intelligent, lasting design. Recently, Fowlkes Studio reimagined a mid-century cabin in Vermont as a dream retreat for backcountry skiers, hikers, and mountain bikers. Named Skyhawk, the wooded escape incorporates vaulted ceilings, exposed joists, and a hidden spa. “We carefully selected building materials and furnishings that only contribute to the experience of relaxation and a connection to nature,” the Fowlkes shared with Surface.

Describe the problem your work solves: We strive to streamline and rationalize overwrought circulation patterns, visual noise and mundane details and replace them with intelligent solutions that both make sense and inspire.

Share the project you are working on now: The childhood home of an artist and his wife who would like to honor the eclectic and whimsical spirit of his artist parents, while creating a new template for their family (that has air conditioning)!

A family compound on Lake Champlain consisting of somewhat bland existing buildings that we aim to imbue with personality and soul.

What you absolutely have to have in your studio: Our dog, Levon.
