DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: In Common With

Nick Ozemba and Felicia Hung, the founders of up-and-coming Brooklyn design studio In Common With, craft lighting fixtures that reflect a multitude of invisible hands—metalsmiths, glassblowers, and ceramicists with whom the duo restlessly experiments. Their latest offerings, which include hand-made ceramic pendants and puck-shaped table lamps, significantly widens the impact of their work, suggesting new stylistic possibilities while effortlessly blending beauty and utility.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: The Puck Series. Puck is a visual vocabulary: if each of the components are letters, the individual fixtures are neighboring words. In this way, this series represents our entire philosophy: to create systems for manifesting new ideas. By stacking two identical shapes, we observed how easily new configurations can suggest themselves. Now the question is, what if we stacked 20?

Describe the problem your work solves: We wanted to build a company that celebrates collaboration. Our name comes from a sentiment we care about: creating things together with people.

Describe the project you are working on now: We are wrapping up design and production on a custom project out in L.A. and simultaneously finishing up the design and build-out of a new studio space we’re moving into this summer.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: We have three new collections launching this week—Puck, Disc, and a collaboration with ceramicist Danny Kaplan—plus a ton of new additions to our existing line.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Music, snacks, wine, and materials/parts to play with. Hopefully a puppy soon!

What you do when you’re not working: Lots of cooking (Nick). Watching Survivor. I’m a big fan of Claire on Bon Appetit (Claire).

Sources of creative envy: Inspired by other creatives but not envious.

The distraction you want to eliminate: Stress.
