The Jacquemus Makeover of Monte-Carlo’s Beach Club Pier
It’s all banana yellow, coconut milk white, and black stripes for the sunbeds, parasols, and beach towels on Monte-Carlo’s legendary Beach Club pier. This is thanks to a partnership between Monaco’s luxury hospitality leader Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer and Jacquemus for a fashionable refresh to the sun-soaked destination. The Jacquemus design—which extends to the adornments at the Pool Café—channels the summery theme from the Parisian label’s “La Croisière” collection, which debuted this January. To complement the shared visual splendors, Jacquemus has opened two boutiques only steps away, one of which features a drawing by Renoir, and another by Matisse.—David Graver

SEE Stephan Sagmiller’s Study of Color
With ‘Kikuyu, (Cenchrus Clandestinus) at Half Moon Bay Links’, fine art photographer Stephan Sagmiller offers a textured look at something both commonplace and extraordinary, by way of a process he developed for capturing large-format imagery. “It’s fun to introduce the work to new people,” he tellsSurface. It’s a seemingly simple subject, but people are surprised by how layered it is. The longer they spend with it, the more it opens up. A kind of abstraction is at work, a realism through abstraction, and vice versa.—D.G.

From Upstate New York, a Biennial You’ve Never Heard of, Anchored by Artists You Have
This summer, the banks of the Hudson River will host the art world’s newest biennial, staged by agriculture- and climate-focused nonprofit Sky High Farm in a former apple storage warehouse. But for all the scene-setting charm that image might evoke, the inaugural edition of the Sky High Biennial isn’t a quaint country affair. The nonprofit, founded by Gagosian-represented artist Dan Colen, counts Anne Imhof, Tschabalala Self, and Rirkrit Tiravanija as just a few of the more than 50 artists participating in the exhibition that will open on June 28.—Jenna Adrian-Diaz

With Big Surprise 2, the Glass House Pays Tribute to the Life and Legacy of Gaetano Pesce
The late Gaetano Pesce, a force of the Italian Radical Design movement and former Surface cover star is the posthumous honoree of The Glass House’s annual summer party. To mark the occasion, the designer’s eponymous studio has teamed up with Meritalia® to create Big Surprise 2: a limited-edition resin vase inspired by Pesce’s own Feltri chairs for the reading room of Philip Johnson’s Brick House—just 80 feet away from the Glass House itself. The limited edition vases will be available to the landmark’s summer party ticketholders, and proceeds will benefit its ongoing preservation efforts. —J.A.D.

A Rarify and Gantri Lamp Puts USM Haller in a New Light
Earlier this month, when furniture and lighting platform Rarify reimagined new and vintage components from Swiss modular storage brand USM Haller as a super-sleek frame for a lamp produced by Gantri, the design world took note. Everyone from trade to production designers (including those for Apple TV+’s Severance) has tapped Rarify’s well of authentic furniture and lighting, but the Cube One lamp is the brand’s first original design. Gantri, however, isn’t merely the lamp’s producer-distributor; it’s also the key to the lamp’s sustainable slant. The 3D-printed lighting unit is also biodegradable and, true to its origins, the USM components allow the lamp to stand as a singular cubic form, or to be expanded into larger installations.—J.A.D

In Champagne Lallier’s R.021 Cuvée, a Sensorial Spark
One of cellar master Dominique Demarville’s first full harvest-to-bottle cuvées at Lallier, the new R.021 Brut Champagne—though multi-vintage—reflects the unique growing conditions of the 2021 grape harvest. The current release in the maison’s flagship Réflexion range (which blends the year’s best production with a smaller percentage of reserve wines), this champagne’s sensorial touch moves from its golden hue to citrus aromas and nutty brioche notes. On the palate, the profile—defined by Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Meunier grapes—centers freshness.—D.G.

Woldy Reyes Headlines Raf’s Croissant Club
This week, Raf’s much-talked-about Croissant Club welcomes coconut bibingka from Filipino-American chef Woldy Reyes—the talent behind restaurants Dhamaka, Ramen by Ra, and more—to its lineup. Looking at the bites in store come future weeks, like Hawa Hassan’s mozzarella-filled croissant with tamarind date sauce and Mehreen Karim’s pickled peaches and cream croissant with corn streusel, the pastry club delightfully defies expectations.—D.G.
