Swoops of Color Form Josh Sperling's 'Big Picture A,B,C,D' at Perrotin, Los Angeles

The centerpiece of the artist and designer’s first solo West Coast exhibition, this large-scale painting-sculpture hybrid, composed of acrylic and stretched canvas curlicues, blends technical craft with optical ingenuity and a sense of celebration. Opposite the full-wall work, Sperling exhibits a rainbow 'Spectrum Squiggle' bench and an installation of amoeba-like mirrors composed of ash and walnut wood.

Here, we ask the artist about the details behind a recent work.

Title of work: Big Picture A,B,C,D

Where to see it: “Big Picture,” at Perrotin, Los Angeles

Three words to describe this work: curvaceous, joyful, completely

An interesting feature that’s not immediately noticeable: This composition is actually four separate works displayed together. There are three vertical breaks separating the entire composition into its four equal sized parts. My intent is for the viewer not to notice the breaks upon initially viewing the piece.

How the work reflects your practice as a whole: It pushes the genre of shaped canvas and manipulation of the stretched canvas material to its max.

One song that captures the work’s essence: “Symphony for a Spider Plant” by Mort Garson
