The late Leonard Lauder’s “once in a generation” art collection is headed to auction.
Sotheby’s will auction the late Leonard Lauder’s private collection this November in New York, showcasing 55 works valued at around $400 million. The centerpiece is Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer (1914), expected to reach $150 million, along with two previously unseen Attersee landscapes. The sale also includes major pieces by Henri Matisse, Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Agnes Martin, and Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. Lauder, who passed away in June, kept this collection in his home, distinguishing it from the Cubist works he donated to the Met, and Sotheby’s will stage the event at the Breuer Building, a site closely tied to his philanthropy.
