Philanthropy—and Plot Twists—at the New Museum Gala

On April 28, the worlds of art, architecture, philanthropy, and performance converged at Cipriani South Street for the New Museum’s spring gala. The evening marked a turning point for the institution, which will move into its new OMA-designed expansion on the Bowery later this year. Gallerist Paula Cooper was recognized throughout the night for her enduring impact on the downtown art scene. Artist Laurie Anderson regaled guests with a performance and address that paid tribute to Cooper—and got the room moving to tai chi. A silent auction—featuring works by Alex Katz, Sol LeWitt, and Francesco Clemente, and editions by Wangechi Mutu and Judy Chicago, drew the night to a close. Notables in attendance included Wangechi Mutu, Sanford Biggers, Lee Quiñones, Anicka Yi, Jasmine Wahi, Dustin Yellin, Philip Glass, Joan Jonas, Shohei Shigematsu, Thelma Golden, Tourmaline, Legacy Russell, and more.
