Opening Shot is a column that peeks inside new hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops with dreamy interiors.
Designer: Cristina Jorge de Carvalho
Location: Castelo de Paiva, Portugal
On offer: Built directly into the steep, terraced cliffs of the Douro Valley, Octant Douro makes no attempt to separate itself from the landscape. This year, the property expands its footprint with the debut of the House Collection, a series of 20 independent, design-led retreats that scale the hillside like a modern village. The project arrives alongside a complete reimagining of the hotel’s public spaces by Lisbon-based designer Cristina Jorge de Carvalho, who replaced standard hospitality finishes with a quiet sanctuary aesthetic.
The new chapter includes 16 one-bedroom and four two-bedroom split-level residences, bringing the total to 79 keys. These aren’t typical guest rooms; they are residential-style dwellings where the boundary between interior and landscape is intentionally thin—floor-to-ceiling glass is a constant throughout, in the rooms, common spaces, and restaurants, orienting every vantage point toward the river and vine-covered hillsides.
