On view at The Bass, August 20 through July 26, 2026, Faire Foyer: Sarah Crowner in Dialogue with Etel Adnan places in concert two women artists who stretch the language of abstraction across form and medium. Adnan’s large-scale ceramic mural—the only one of its kind in the U.S.—anchors the installation. Around it, Crowner constructs an immersive setting with a semicircular carpeted alcove, known as a faire foyer in French, and reflective bronze “stones.” These stones, cast from enlarged beach pebbles, are conscientiously placed around the space to allow their imperfect surfaces to reflect viewers’ movements. To forge a cohesive environment, Crowner interspersed photographs of the California coastline that Adnan shot in the 1960s. The exhibition is an embodiment of both artists’ unique approach to abstraction and weaves together varying surfaces—glaze, metal, fiber, carpet, and more.
