Nicolas Party’s latest exhibition is an exercise in iterative repetition—the historical tradition of Old Master studies. Those who know the painter’s oeuvre will find something familiar in each of the 47 works on view, given that all—save for three—are oil on copper miniature replicas of a previous Party painting. The exceptions are an oil miniature and a large-scale pastel in mural form of Francisco Goya’s Still Life with Golden Bream (1808–12). The exhibition sees Party reclaim academic exercises in the process of surveying, replicating, and reinterpreting his own body of work—bolstered by his own replicas of the Spanish master’s famed meditation on mortality.
