In his latest show with the Harlem-based Claire Oliver Gallery, multidisciplinary artist Stan Squirewell plumbs symbols of Black domestic life—several of which give the exhibition of collages its name. Squirewell builds upon a series of archival images of unknown subjects, sourced from the Smithsonian Institute, as well as historic images of his own friends’ and family’s distant relations. In turn, he builds upon them with vivid hues of paint, pattern, and evocative titles that invoke the traditions of domestic life passed down through generations.
