With a Salon Set to Skyline Views at Saga, Theory Proves Print is Alive and Well

At Theory’s salon last week, the minimalist fashion label gathered creatives across the worlds of the arts, food, and fashion to celebrate the launch of Theories Issue II, its twice-yearly print magazine. With a precedent of past Theories celebrations set by lively-until-last-call nights at Bridges and The Nines, Saga’s executive chef and Theory Salon host Charlie Mitchell carried the torch with a vinyl soundtrack, seafood- and vegetable-forward light bites, and a kitchen tour concluded with a tasting of the restaurant’s signature Dirty Rice with Caviar and Tuna. The evening culminated with remarks from Mitchell and Industry’s Ken Leung, who is at the forefront of Theory’s spring campaign. “It’s similar in some ways,” Leung told Surface of stepping in front of the camera for a fashion label instead of a cult favorite television drama or principal photography for a work of indie theater. “Everyone is an expert on a very specific craft. Everyone is an artist…I love that ‘out of many, one’ element. It’s exactly the same.”

Designer of the Day: Richard Holland and Jonathan Harvey of Holland Harvey

For East London–based architecture and interiors studio Holland Harvey, founded by Richard Holland and Jonathan Harvey, social and environmental impact are driving considerations in residential and hospitality design. The award-winning firm, which donates 1% of its time each year to assist third-sector clients, may best be known for Corner Tate Modern or Hoxton Shoreditch, but its expansive portfolio includes substantial retrofit, low-impact, and heritage-led work. Next, Holland Harvey is set to transform a 1930s bank—in a City of London conservation area—into a 200-key "aparthotel" for a new hospitality brand, with completion expected in 2027. Their work will reinterpret the original Art Deco interior and reinstate character that’s been lost (while using natural and low-carbon materials).
