Here, we ask designers to take a selfie and give us an inside look at their life.
Age: 36
Occupation: Founder & Designer of JANE JONES
Instagram: @jane_jones_la
Hometown: San Francisco
Studio Location: Echo Park, L.A.
Describe what you make: I make investment pieces for the modern woman at the intersection of luxury and play.
The most important thing you’ve designed to date: The most important thing I’ve created to date is the Jane Jones showroom. It’s the heartbeat of the entire JJ universe. Until this space was complete I felt like I was walking around with a missing limb. No matter how hard I tried explaining this fever-dream of an idea to my interior designer, my landlord, my husband, it wasn’t until the showroom was finished that everything immediately clicked into place. It’s also when everyone around me started to have that collective aha moment (and sigh of relief knowing I wasn’t totally missing the mark).
Entering this space is a moving experience. There’s an immediate Alice in Wonderland effect that feels like you’ve been dropped upside-down into a luxury playground that oozes sumptuousness at every turn. And the best part is, since it’s quietly tucked away in a strip mall on Sunset Boulevard, you might walk right past it without ever knowing what a hidden treasure it is.
Describe the problem your work solves: I see my work less about solving a problem and more about a visceral solution to highbrow fatigue. Luxury Fine Jewelry is intimidating, and JANE JONES gives you the permission to mellow out and release that hesitancy. I was put here to gently remind everyone that “luxury” and “fun” are not mutually exclusive.
Share the project you are working on now: Imagine a fistful of diamonds, and then think of the word diabolical. That’s the energy I’m bringing for next year’s collection. So buckle your seatbelts and stay tuned.
What you absolutely have to have in your studio: Music with bass: surf rock/indie/reggae while corresponding, 2000s hip hop while creating. BYREDO candles. Bedazzled props. Vintage jewels.
What you do when you’re not working: I spend most weekends luxuriating in Ojai with my son and my husband. My personal and professional life blends together so it’s important to step outside of my Echo Park bubble and get back to earth a bit. I get to pop on my linen overalls, cook fancy things, assemble floral arrangements, sit still in the sun, and read.
Sources of creative envy (dead or alive): RIHANNA
The distraction you want to eliminate: Following up, touching base, and circling back. Then Instagram.
Concrete or marble? Marble.
High-Rise Or Townhouse? Townhouse. Well… twist my arm, throw in the penthouse too.
Remember Or Forget? Remember.
Aliens Or Ghosts? Ghosts seem a little serious and I’m not sure they’d survive under the weight of my jewels. I’d party with an alien.
