Rutherford Chang’s first institutional exhibition, “Hundreds and Thousands” surveys the late conceptual artist’s decades-long practice and his artful fixation with collection and repetition. Presented by UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, the exhibition centers two of Chang’s seminal works—CENTS (2017-2024), made of 10,000 pennies minted before 1982, and We Buy White Albums (2006-2025), composed of copies of The Beatles’ 1968 album (commonly referred to as The White Album) collected over roughly two decades. “This exhibition includes a selection of key projects which are evocative, even representative, of the full breadth of Rutherford’s practice,” Philip Tinari, co-curator of the exhibition and the director of UCCA, shared with Surface. “It is not a comprehensive retrospective but rather a focused survey.” In its focus on significant contributions, an understanding of Chang’s rigor and humor comes to life.
