After more than 15 years in Los Angeles, Michigan-born designer Sarah Sherman Samuel returns home. Alongside her studio in Grand Rapids, she’s opening Gallery SSS, built on the foundation that art, design, and craft can share a space without one feeling more powerful than the other. The first exhibition there, “Homecoming,” brings together artists whose stories started in Michigan or the greater Midwest before traveling elsewhere for work. Origin acts as the show’s overarching theme, and touches upon the region’s landscapes, seasons, and materials, such as clay, wood, glass, fiber, and leather (which keep coming up in the practices of those who have left). Some of the participating artists include John Torreano, Thaddeus Wolfe, Crystal Gregory, and Sherman Samuel herself.
