DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Färg & Blanche

Collaborations with Gärsnäs, BD Barcelona, and Petite Friture have propelled Fredrik Färg and Emma Marga Blanche’s ten-year-old studio to design stardom in Europe. Now, the trailblazing work-and-life partners debut stateside with a richly layered textile collection for Bernhardt Design, applying their experimental eye to unpack the concept of time with remarkable dexterity.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: The next piece.

Describe the problem your work solves: Our role is to question what’s existing today and to find new ways of doing things, while not forgetting past knowledge.

Describe the project you are working on now: Most of our current projects are confidential. We recently did stage scenography for a band called AMASON for their concert at Way Out West. Our next big project is actually having a baby in one month.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: Textiles for Bernhardt Design that we pre-launched at ICFF in May. The collection is available in August.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Music, fashion books, nice people… and lots of materials and machines!

What you do when you’re not working: We are going to the Stockholm Archipelago, where Emma’s family has owned a remote cottage since the 1940s on an island. It doesn’t have electricity or running water. It’s the best place to relax and be creative!

Sources of creative envy: Alexander McQueen, Iris Van Herpen, filmmaker Jacques Tati.

The distraction you want to eliminate: Smartphones.
