DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Floris Wubben

There’s a chameleonic appeal to the ceramic work of Floris Wubben, the freethinking and process-driven Amsterdam designer who can seamlessly pivot between creating sculptural one-of-a-kind pieces and studio-made products coveted for their stolid forms and shimmering glazes. His latest debuts, a throne-like chair and cloud-colored freestanding mirror on view in The Future Perfect’s booth at Design Miami, embody his unflinching drive to experiment with new forms and expand his material lexicon all while maintaining a soft, poetic eloquence.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: The pressing (extrusion) process.

Describe the problem your work solves: We do not solve any serious problems!

Describe the project you are working on now: We created a large pressing (extrusion) machine 178 inches high, this is where we create large work with. Now we are really discovering the possibilities of what this machine can do.

With this large machine, we created a Throne. The inner structures of the Throne consist of a complex network of technically calculated shapes. The outcome of the final piece is dependent on this inner structure as it aids as a guide steering me to intuitively reveal the piece as I meticulously cut away at the large mass of clay. Through the physical act of the cutting away process a discovery takes place as, step by step, the piece gets its final form, unveiling the shape within the structure.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: We’re working on a totally new collection for The Future Perfect. We will present this new project at the end of 2023.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Good vibes with the studio family.

What you do when you’re not working: Sleeping or eating.

Sources of creative envy: gt2P from Chile—they created a ceramic chair covered in lava.

The distraction you want to eliminate: Managing the studio and all the things that come with it, like HR or bookkeeping. Also, getting frustrated when it doesn’t work the first time.
