Dawoud Bey, Lucy Sante, and Stephen Shore award the 2025 Saltzman Prize to Qiana Mestrich.

Rising photographer, critically-acclaimed writer, and former Surface contributor Qiana Mestrich has won the 2025 Saltzman Prize, an award recognizing emerging photographers whose work brings fresh perspectives to visual culture. Along with a $10,000 grant, she will receive the CPW Vision Award for Emerging Photographer and a solo exhibition in 2026. An artist, writer, and photo historian, Mestrich explores themes of race, motherhood, and labor, and is set to release a book expanding on her influential blog, Dodge & Burn: Decolonizing Photography History.

Just in time for Salone, direct train service between Milan and Paris will resume.

After a 19-month closure due to a 2023 landslide, the Paris-to-Milan train route is finally reopening on March 31. Multiple operators, including Trenitalia and TGV Lyria, will resume daily service, with tickets starting at just €29 (about $30). Travelers can once again experience the seamless charm of breakfast in Paris and lunch in Milan, with bookings now open for trips through July 4.

LACMA announces a summer opening date for the plaza around the new David Geffen galleries.

This summer, LACMA will unveil parts of the plaza around its new David Geffen galleries, offering the public its closest look yet at Peter Zumthor’s striking design. Donors and members can tour the unfinished building in June, while performances by Kamasi Washington will activate the space later that month. Ahead of the gallery’s April 2026 grand opening, the museum will introduce new outdoor installations, a Rodin sculpture garden, and relocated dining and retail spaces. 

Manchester United taps Foster + Partners to design “the world’s greatest football stadium.”

Manchester United is planning a new, $2.6 billion,100,000-seat stadium near their current home, Old Trafford, designed by Foster + Partners as the centerpiece of a larger regeneration project. The venue will feature a vast energy-harvesting canopy and anchor a walkable, mixed-use district described as a “miniature city” and expected to generate $9.5 billion annually for the UK economy. Construction will take five years, with prefabricated elements transported via the Manchester Ship Canal, ultimately surpassing Wembley as the country’s largest football venue.

OpenAI’s Sam Altman teases a new AI model that is “good at creative writing.”

The announcement of OpenAI’s new model, capable of creative writing, reignites debate over copyright, as AI firms face lawsuits for training models on protected content. At the same time, the UK government considers allowing such usage without permission. OpenAI founder Sam Altman shared an example of the AI’s metafictional short story, which reflects on its own training data and the nature of grief, further fueling concerns from some about AI’s impact on creative industries.
