Associate Editor, The List

We’re looking for a dynamic and design-obsessed editor to oversee the content program for our members-only community: The List. This job is perfect for someone who enjoys writing about new product releases, furniture collections, splashy retail store openings, interior design projects, and more.

The ideal candidate thrives in a quick-turnaround digital environment and possesses strong editorial judgment and writing skills as well as a deep passion for design and culture. The role requires the ability to write clean, engaging copy about subjects that can sometimes be a bit stuffy, and act as the editorial liaison with the brands, artists, and designers who make up The List community. Opportunities to contribute to the larger Surface content universe, including the Design Dispatch newsletter, SurfaceMag.com, e-commerce site Design Dose, and physical gallery Surface Area in the Miami Design District, will be common.

The List Editor acts as a key content generator within the Surface editorial team, developing angles and ideas for branded stories that grow and maintain Surface’s reputation as a respected destination for design industry news and trend-focused reporting across contemporary creative fields.

The role requires conceptualizing, creating, and commissioning industry-focused content at a world-class standard. A global outlook and ambition to deepen Surface’s relationship with a growing, increasingly digital-connected audience is paramount.

The List Editor thrives in a fast-paced remote environment and has proven experience working in and producing compelling ideas in service of the global design industry. The ideal candidate also has a strong understanding of Surface’s audience and a willingness to push it forward.

Your daily tasks:
-Writing quippy and interesting stories about new projects, products, and founder-focused themes for members of The List.
-Contributing to Surface’s editorial coverage across channels, including the Design Dispatch newsletter, social media channels, e-commerce platform Design Dose, and SurfaceMag.com.
-Conceptualizing, writing, and editing both editorial and marketing copy.
-Identifying and pitching original ideas about up-and-coming and established talent in design, architecture, art, fashion, travel, and other industries in contemporary culture.
-Serving as a brand ambassador for Surface and The List—attending industry events and sharing editorial opportunities with brands and PR representatives interested in coverage.

You’re qualified if you:
-Can turn around clean and incisive copy in a fast-paced environment.
-Experienced in digital media and publishing, with a knack for packaging content across different platforms including social, audio, video, and live events.
-Possess an intimate knowledge of the design world.
-Maintain a network of contacts in the design industry.
-Have a grasp on formulating and pitching ideas for clients and executing branded content and partnerships.
-Thrive in a startup environment with the ability to wear many hats.
-Bring a strong point of view with fresh ideas for editorial columns, rubrics, and verticals.
-Want to build and be a core member of a company experimenting.
-Have a minimum 3 years editorial experience covering creative industries.
-Have never uttered the words “that’s not my job.”Competencies:
-Ability to deliver written copy within tight deadlines and self-edit.
-Idea generator with a passion for uncovering original stories and angles.
-Accountable with an inherent ability to follow through without being asked.
-Strong internal communication skills and emotional intelligence.
-Self-starter, don’t need hand-holding.
-Familiar with Wordpress, Google Analytics, SEO, and most social media platforms.
-Collaborative working style and hunger to get involved in projects outside your job description.
