For Miami Art Week, Cuban artist Alexandre Arrechea fashioned a site-specific installation that takes inspiration from Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. Recalling a forum-style library, the 62-foot rotunda on a swath of South Beach uses red and white beach towels to illustrate phrases from the book such as “Now is no time to think of what you do not have. Think of what you can do with what there is,” and “But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” The work is meant to embody humankind’s ability to withstand challenges and persist, even in the face of hardship.
