Inviting visitors to see one other and be seen in an entirely new light, the seventh annual Flatiron Public Plaza Design Installation invites passersby to create connections with one another at a time when New Yorkers are feeling more distanced than ever before. Six-foot circles affixed to the plaza create nine “spotlights,” each with its own vertical metal frame. Ropes weave through each part, like a curtain figuratively pulled aside, to make room for viewers to take the spotlight and connect with each other. Nina Cooke John, founder and principal of Studio Cooke John, aims for “Point of Action” to get us thinking about our own interconnectedness so we can get through this uncertain moment together. “We’re at a threshold during this pandemic,” she says. “Now that our eyes have been opened to realities that have been with us all along, how do we move forward?”
