The German artist uses the many meanings of “abacus”—as an ancient counting tool; as a software for banking systems; as the uppermost section of an architectural column—to mirror new paintings and sculptures, which use a distinct visual language to imply multiple meanings. He deftly deconstructs and recombines various images, such as eyes, animal forms, and minimally rendered figures, to question traditional interpretations and beckon new perspectives. Throughout, he asks: which representation of “abacus” is the most accurate?
