Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, New York, has unveiled “The Paula Hayes Garden,” a permanent land-art installation by sculptor Paula Hayes surrounding a newly restored Hudson River Overlook terrace. Completed in May 2026, it marks the first publicly accessible permanent landscape and sculpture garden by Hayes, whose commissions have historically been private. “This is of course a great honor and a milestone in my career,” Hayes said. “The honor is both the recognition that my sculptures and landscapes have a deeply intrinsic relationship, and that the public aspect is possible for both.”

Woven throughout the garden are five original Hayes sculptures, including a custom-colored birdbath (the same model displayed at MoMA’s Sculpture Garden), a whimsical bronze garden gnome tucked among flowering shrubs, and three illuminated Gazing Globes made from upcycled radio components, vintage technology, and pulverized CDs. Hayes sees the sculptures as anchoring points for visitors moving through the space: “I place sculptures in the garden to help focus and orient our own scale in the otherwise sometimes overwhelming vastness. The markers we place can hold us for a time to gather up some energy to be playful, whimsical, or pour some sorrow into something along the way.”
