Claire Oliver Gallery opens its season with “The Weight of Grace,” a solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Stan Squirewell, on view from September 4 through October 31, with an artist reception on September 25. Comprising 14 new mixed-media works, soft sculptures, and a monumental installation, the show explores migration, memory, and lineage across five generations of Squirewell’s family. “This body of work is my love letter to the people who came before me,” Squirewell said. “History rarely gave them credit, so I wanted to build them a throne instead of a footnote.” Anchoring the exhibition is a 10-foot sculptural installation modeled on the shotgun house, a vernacular dwelling central to Black Southern life, built from reclaimed wood and housing a photograph of the artist’s fifth-generation grandfather, a Civil War veteran. Squirewell also draws on Smithsonian archival photographs and personal family images, layering them with collected fabrics, hand-carved frames inscribed with Langston Hughes’ poetry, and the Japanese shou sugi ban fire-blackening technique.
