DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Dennis Cheung

As the founder of Hong Kong’s Studio RYTE, Dennis Cheung approaches a variety of design projects spanning furniture, interiors, and branding with a sense of enthusiasm and pragmatism in order to simply make cities and spaces better places to be. The tight-knit studio isn’t afraid to get its hands dirty—his team constantly experiments with novel fabrication techniques, resulting in breakthroughs such as the sustainable Flax Fiber Triplex Stool that recently took home an award at SaloneSatellite during Milan Design Week.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: The Flax Fiber Triplex Stool, which has spanned more than five years of research and development since inception. Funded by ourselves, we pushed the boundary of material and innovation. It has gained recognition from the Inde Awards, Cologne Pure Talents Contest, and Milan’s SaloneSatellite.

Describe the problem your work solves: The stool responds to the nomadic lifestyle of the current generation by providing a solution to users who move frequently around the world or between cities in different stages of life. It pushed the limit of the unconventional material of flax fiber in the industry, reducing carbon footprint by saving shipping weight as well as volume. We achieve that by maximizing its structural performance via computer simulation and physical prototyping.

Describe the project you are working on now: We are working on several interior projects for education spaces and restaurants. We are also developing some acoustic furniture and lighting. We hope to bring impact to the world through little steps of our designs.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: Architectural remodeling and furniture series for a factory in Urumqi.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Prototyping equipment. Either manual hand tools or power tools.

What you do when you’re not working: Learning about Italian wine, food, and the language.

Sources of creative envy: Charles and Ray Eames.

The distraction you want to eliminate: Social media.
