DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Gabriel Scott

Since founding their Montreal lighting and furniture studio in 2012, the brothers-in-law have carved a niche with jagged, gem-like fixtures that find harmony in the staccato. Their latest lighting collection, which debuted at this year's Euroluce, is a masterful study in the creative departure—plump glass orbs replace geometric planes in a series that deepens the studio's design language yet suggests even greater things to come.

Describe what you make: We design and manufacture contemporary furniture and lighting fixtures, all handmade in our Montreal studio.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: It would need to be our WELLES lighting series, launched in early 2013. It introduced us and our clientele to the endless potential of a modular system. Since then, we’ve incorporated the concept of modularity and flexibility to all our lighting pieces.

Describe the problem your work solves: Much like WELLES, and similar systems we’ve introduced since then, we offer the ability to custom tailor each and every lighting fixture we manufacture without disturbing our production lead times or costs.

Describe the project you are working on now: We’re just now completing the LUNA Series—a new modular lighting system made of blown glass volumes in various colors and forms. Similar to beads on a string, this particular design offers infinite interpretations of tone, shape, and refracted light.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: LUNA will debut at Euroluce at Salone del Mobile in Milan. See it at Pavilion 13, Stand F-06 from April 9–14.

What you absolutely have to have in your studio: Common/shared space. Our team of 30+ people all work collaboratively in our 10,000-square-foot studio. Everyone from R&D and logistics to production work in clear sight of one another allows for a very transparent and communal studio environment.

What you do when you’re not working: When we’re not with our studio family, we make time to be with our own families. We both have young kids and try to enjoy as many memorable moments together.

Sources of creative envy: Carlo Scarpa, Charles and Ray Eames, Gio Ponti, Joseph Dirand, Louis Kahn, Olafur Eliasson.

The distraction you want to eliminate: Netflix series making for sleepless nights. (Currently, The OA.)
