DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Kiana Underwood

Kiana Underwood, founder and creative director of Tulipina, has built a career on creating lush and artful floral arrangements that treat color and texture with the intention of fine art. Underwood traces her love of flowers back to her grandfather's garden and her mother's constant presence of aromatic blooms like tuberose and narcissus, an upbringing that shaped a style she describes as increasingly free-flowing over time. Alongside her husband and co-founder, Nate, who runs the business side and shoots much of the studio's photography, she has built Tulipina into one of the most recognized names in luxury floral design, with work spanning New York, Paris, Dubai, and Tokyo and two books, Color Me Floral and Tulipina's Floral Fantasy, that document her creative evolution.

Home Town: Tehran, Iran.

Studio Location: New York and Como, Italy.

Describe what you make: I create art with flowers.

Describe the problem your work solves: My work fundamentally changes a space and the mood of those who enter that space. You can physically observe the increase in joy and happiness on people’s faces when they encounter a room that has been transformed with flowers.

Share the project you are working on now: We have several upcoming events, but the two receiving the most focus are large projects in Macau and Ireland.

What you absolutely have to have in your studio: Floral pin frogs (kenzan), good floral shears, and Bach playing through the speaker.

What you do when you’re not working: I play the piano, garden, travel, relax with my dog, and spend time with my family.

Sources of creative envy (dead or alive): I don’t envy anyone, but admire Bach, Julia Child, Freddy Mercury, Michael Jackson, Constance Spry, Ennio Morricone, Quentin Tarantino, Beethoven, and Harry Styles.

The distraction you want to eliminate: My phone.

Concrete or marble? Marble.

High-Rise Or Townhouse? High-rise.

Remember or Forget? Remember.

Aliens or Ghosts? Aliens.

Dark Or Light? Light.
