A Celebration of South African Design at Cape Town's New Stay

Gorgeous George merges 18th-century grandeur with an industrial–style interior and local artworks that reflect the gallery–lined streets of historic downtown.

Gorgeous George

Location: Cape Town

Designer: Tristan du Plessis and Urbane Citizen Architecture

On offer: Housed in two restored heritage buildings connected by a rooftop bar near the St. George’s Mall, the 32 rooms are finished with modern Victorian design elements, hand-painted murals by David Brits, and furniture pieces from local talents David Krynauw, Gregor Jenkin, Studio 19, Douglas&Co, and Dokter and Misses.

Standout features: Artist Lucie de Moyencourt’s show-stopping lobby mural of 1,800 hand-painted tiles depicting a map of Cape Town is an impressive introduction. Though the standout space is undoubtedly the rooftop restaurant Gigi where executive chef Guy Bennett reinterprets European–style classics with a strictly seasonal mindset. It also features a raised all-glass plunge pool, and a plant-filled bar with a cocktail program conceived by the heralded Jody Rahme.
