The immersive five-channel film installation uses the material of land—and the histories and tensions carried within—as a metaphor to reflect the range of emotions brought about by this tumultuous year. Full of natural beauty and chaotic motion, the film intersperses swirling landscapes and atmospheric sounds, infusing New York’s built environment with imagery of lush, swampy landscapes from Hamilton’s native North Florida. Shot in the aftermath of a tropical storm, the film also gestures toward the reality of the Pier as an ecological red zone under threat of rising sea levels and increasingly catastrophic weather patterns brought about by the human-inflicted forces of climate change.
