For his first museum commission and solo presentation, Chris Schanck reinterpreted the late-19th century Martelé dressing table that graces Dallas Museum of Art’s permanent collection. Made primarily of found objects from the immediate neighborhood of his Detroit studio, Schanck’s dressing table is coated in resin and aluminum foil—a reference to the Dallas aluminum factory where both he and his father previously worked. The two dressing tables face off in a conversation across time about craftsmanship, material, and their inherent vanity.
