Helen Pashgian may have been influential within the Light and Space movement in the 1960s, but her role is largely unsung today. That may soon change thanks to a spate of new exhibitions opening this month (SITE Santa Fe, Copenhagen Contemporary, and Lehmann Maupin in New York) that spotlight recent experimentations of her best-known lens and sphere sculptures that range from intimate to immense. Using an innovative application of industrial epoxies, plastics, and resins to create her ethereal surfaces, Pashgian refers to her sculptures as “presences” in space that viewers must circumnavigate to fully experience. Each vantage point invites an observation of change—color and light shifting or internal objects appearing and receding—that challenge our perception and cause us to question what we’re seeing.
