An expansive survey of asymmetries of power through the work of 25 contemporary artists and collectives, “Performing Conditions: Artistic Labor and Dependency as Form” grapples with art’s interwoven relationship with debt and dependency. Curated by Natalie Bell and Ramona Ngin, and encompassing all of the MIT List Visual Arts Center’s galleries, the milestone group exhibition features painting, sculpture, and multimedia installation, as well as video work and live performance. From Ghislaine Leung’s conceptual scores to Xaviera Simmons’ large-scale outdoor installation, thoughtful questions around artistic labor and production are mined for meaningful engagement.
