Neri Oxman harnesses the secrets of the natural world to create entirely new types of materials, buildings, and construction processes. The architect and founder of the MIT Media Lab’s Mediated Matter Group questions the materials, tools, and methods of architecture, aiming to rethink how we build and design with one essential objective: to transition from a focus on human material wealth to environmental health. Never-before-seen projects such as the Biodiversity Pavilion—a structure made of naturally occurring responsive materials such as melanin, reducing the need for additional cladding—make their debut, while rarely seen Aguahoja pavilions question whether discarded crustacean shells, fallen leaves, and apple skins can function as building materials and decay naturally when no longer in use.
