The Mexico-born artist’s most comprehensive show to date creates a magical Gesamtkunstwerk that links his opulent material sensibilities to early experiences in punk music, devotional ritual, and celebratory queerness. His theatrical yet introspective approach is on full display: anthropomorphic sculptures that radiate psychic energy are festooned in craft store beads, sequins, and plastic jewels; his signature stained glass works illustrate colorful configurations of planets revolving around the sun; a life-size carousel rotates endlessly; and a series of paintings that represent the seasons embody death and rebirth.
