DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Jean Lin of Colony Design

In 2014, Jean Lin founded New York City–based Colony, a cooperative gallery, design studio, and strategy firm dedicated to platforming independent design and uplifting the community behind it. In the ensuing years, Lin’s work has spanned leading lighting and design representation to thoughtfully imagined interiors projects. This is just the beginning of Colony’s capabilities. By invitation only, Colony Presents is Lin’s new in situ program for boutique design studios with strong perspectives——and established to further their success through an infusion of resources. Additionally, following three successful cohorts of Colony’s The Designers’ Residency, an incubator program for emerging American design studios, Lin has just announced the formation of The Colony Foundation for Independent American Design, a not-for-profit entity intending to grow the global influence of independent American designers. For The Colony Foundation, Lin is in the midst of establishing a founding advisory board, and fundraising, as well.

Describe the problem your work solves: In all aspects of our work we strive to celebrate, educate and create work that prioritizes community, craftsmanship and emotional resonance over mass production.

Share the project you are working on now: I recently announced the official launch of Colony Architecture, a full-service architecture studio in New York City. Eleven years ago, we began humbly in real estate staging and have since partnered closely with architects through all phases of their projects. Our earliest interiors clients found us the same way that our trade clients do today: through the roster of independent American designers on our gallery floor. With Colony Architecture, our commitment to independent design will now encompass every aspect of the built environment. Just as our interior design projects have given us greater insight into the ways heritage furniture is specified, our architectural projects will help us better anticipate spatial challenges on a larger scale.

Colony’s nascent architectural projects present us the opportunity to leave a lasting mark on the built environment. We will continue to work with our cherished ecosystem of ethically-driven creatives and makers to bring spaces to life where beauty and substance take equal precedence.

I believe that the best design is that which is made with integrity and the best spaces are those which bring meaning and purpose to the people who inhabit it.

What you absolutely have to have in your studio: Extra shoes, or even better, a backup outfit.

The distraction you want to eliminate: Body dysmorphia/the patriarchy.
