Tan France Introduces His First Furniture Collection

Singapore–based Castlery has welcomed Tan France, star of Netflix’s Queer Eye and Next in Fashion, as the global furniture brand’s first design collaborator. The debut 18-piece collection encompasses materially rich furniture, dining pieces, lighting, rugs, and accessories. Developed over 15 months with Castlery’s design team, the collaboration translates France’s fashion sensibility into the home through sculptural silhouettes, warm oak, handblown glass, natural travertine, richly textured upholstery, and carved detailing.

The charm of the Anika Table Lamp acts as a microcosm for the collection’s influences. “I wanted to use a classic South Asian doorway archway as the jumping-off point for a lamp, and whilst designing it I really wanted to offer a playful moment in a space,” France tells Surface. “And what better accessory to create play and interest than a lamp, as it’s accessible and relatively inexpensive.”

As for its organic form, France “played with stacking the arch shape on top of another arch shape—which ended up looking like bells—and I thought it was so darn cute,” he adds. “Next, I worked on color. I wanted the lamps to be a point of interest, so I went with bold colors in high gloss for ultimate impact. I am crazy about how it turned out.”

A dialogue—on home, culture, and country—underpins all of the pieces. “Castlery was built in Singapore—a city that has always made something new from the meeting of many worlds,” Declan Ee, co-founder of Castlery, says. “When we met Tan, we recognized that same story in him. This collection is what two outsiders, each at home between different worlds, made together.”

it’s something you create, wherever you are,” France adds. “I wanted to create pieces for the moments that bring a home to life, the table where everyone gathers, the sofa you sink into after a long day, the lamp you switch on when the house finally goes quiet. The beauty of a home is found in those everyday rituals, and I wanted this collection to celebrate them.” From gravitational room anchors like the Kagan Sofa and Anaya Tea Table to the plush Rumi Accent Chair, and the sculptural Rayan Mirror, France succeeds marrying form, function, and cultural splendor.
