For decades, Steven Sebring has had a rare perspective on Patti Smith. The photographer and filmmaker, who spent more than ten years making the documentary Patti Smith: Dream of Life, has built an archive of images that few people have ever seen. Now, a selection of those photographs is on view in New York for the first time.

“Patti Smith by Steven Sebring” was commissioned by Spanish fashion house Massimo Dutti to mark the opening of its new flagship at 575 Broadway in SoHo. The exhibition is presented as a portrait of a long creative partnership, and of the city that shaped it. Both artists call New York home, and Smith’s influence on its music, poetry, and avant-garde scenes runs through the work.
“This project is deeply personal to me because it connects my own way of seeing New York with Patti Smith,” Sebring shares, “a foundational figure in the city’s contemporary cultural scene.”
