Izumi Kato Brings His Childhood Pastime to Perrotin New York

After five years, Izumi Kato returns to New York City this fall with a solo exhibition at Perrotin. The Tokyo-based artist’s latest works, made between 2025 and 2026, reflect a change in inspiration. Kato has long been known for figures sprouting flowers and botanical forms. Now he is turning to the sea. A lifelong fisherman who once tried to make a career of it, Kato fills his new paintings and sculptures with fish, coral, and other marine life. His signature hitogata, or humanoid figures, sport frog-like legs and mermaid tails. Some carry fishing lures, attached like remoras clinging to a shark.

An interesting feature that’s not immediately noticeable:

画面全てに気をつかっている。見れば見るほど、発見が出てくる絵。
僕は全ての絵に対して同様に描いている。
I pay close attention to every part of the canvas. The more you look at the painting, the more you discover. I approach all of my paintings in the same way.

How the work reflects your practice as a whole:

子供の頃から釣りが趣味で、海の生物に興味があった。
この作品は、日々積み重ねて制作している中での新しい絵画。
アップデートされた先端の絵です。
Fishing has been my hobby since childhood, and I have always been interested in marine life. This painting is a new work that has emerged from my ongoing, day-to-day practice. It represents the latest development in my work.

One song that captures the work’s essence: “Road to Nowhere” by Talking Heads.
