DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Anna Jewsbury

Having studied mathematics and philosophy at Oxford, Anna Jewsbury channels her divergent interests into nearly every component of her London jewelry and ceramics studio Completedworks. From off-white ceramic planters inspired by drapery to gold vermeil earrings that resemble scrunchies, her offerings gracefully challenge tides of convention by using left-of-center sculptural forms that ruminate on the human condition.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: We keep coming back to our Scrunch earrings. They draw on the familiar—the ordinary experience of just tying up your hair—in an unexpected and playful way. They’re a simultaneously confident and humble piece that can play a different role for the woman wearing them. They’re not just about adornment or a talisman—they narrate an idea.

Describe the problem your work solves: Our work is driven by an interest in the communicative potential of everyday objects. There’s also an element of wanting to provoke convention and create a new visual language and way of thinking.

Describe the project you are working on now: We’re working on a collection of decorative objects, some small sculptures, and our next jewelry collection.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: Our debut men’s jewelry collection has just gone live on our website. We’re about to launch our new women’s collection in stores and online later this month. We also have a few collaborations that we’re working on for next year but can’t say more for now.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Michael Nyman and lots of coffee.

What you do when you’re not working: I spend time outdoors with my two-year-old son. I’ve noticed that ever since he was born, I’ve been drawn to spend more time in nature, tending to our small garden, or taking trips outside of the city. When I’m not in the studio, I love to walk around London and go to galleries and second-hand bookshops.

Sources of creative envy: Cy Twombly.

The distraction you want to eliminate: My phone and Brexit.

Concrete or marble? Tadao Ando concrete, marble objects. Our very first jewelry collection incorporated pieces of reclaimed marble. It’s a really difficult material to work with but incredibly rewarding.

High-rise or townhouse? Townhouse.

Remember or forget? Forget.

Aliens or ghosts? Aliens.

Dark or light? Light.
