DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Deceres

After finding affinities in how their shared upbringing on the Mexico/California border influenced their design sensibilities, Denise Martinez and Jorge Arturo Ibarra founded their furniture studio, Deceres, which creates carefully handcrafted pieces in collaboration with local artisans. The studio’s pieces, which draw from the creative well of their Mexican ancestry, never distract or over-exert their presence thanks to how they temper severe silhouettes with humble materials that lend a restrained presence.

Coba Series
Sakro Chairs

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: The first piece we ever produced, the Iuxta Chair, which we debuted in black Monterrey Marble at NOMAD St. Moritz with Unno Gallery in 2021. The following year, we presented the Charred Oak version with Unno at Luis Barragán’s Casa Ortega during Design Week in Mexico City. Iuxta is our interpretation of what a presider’s chair within a Pre-Colombian temple would’ve looked like in this day and age. With its sharp lines and vertical void, the design language of this piece representing duality and depicting themes such as our Mexican ancestry and its religiosity established the creative well that we’ve drawn from for every design to date.

Describe the problem your work solves: Collectively, we have become increasingly preoccupied with comfort as an escape from reality, which we find can lead to complacency. Through severe forms, our works offer a sanctuary for conscious introspection.

Describe the project you are working on now: We just made both our U.S. and curatorial debut in an exhibition called “Tiempo Tempio,” at Eyn Vas in Los Angeles. Co-curated with Gry Space, this show features works from six designers and artists, and includes the release of new designs from our latest collection. We also recently launched our Credo Collection with Obakki and are working on expanding the series and introducing new finishes.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: Some of the newly launched pieces in Tiempo Tempio incorporate aluminum, steel, and bronze elements that foreshadow a series of fully metal works to come later this year. We’re also designing our first ground-up residential design project, Casa Deceres, in San Diego.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Music and dim lighting.

What you do when you’re not working: Our work often overlaps with activities that we enjoy, such as visiting galleries and museums or traveling abroad. Hosting an evening at home with friends is probably our favorite pastime.

Sources of creative envy: Donald Judd, Lucio Fontana, Richard Serra, Carlo Scarpa, Eduardo Chillida, Michael Heizer, Walter de Maria. The list goes on…

The distraction you want to eliminate: Instagram and Ssense sales.
