Opening Shot

Belgian Heritage Handbag Label Delvaux Pays Tribute to Ancient Rome at Its New Flagship

The oldest fine leather goods house in the world recreates a period Roman familia mansion to display its collections and accessories.

Opening Shot is a column that peeks inside new hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops with interiors to drool over.

DELVAUX
Designer: Vudafieri-Saverino Partners
Location: Rome

On offer: Keeping in line with the Belgian leather manufacturer’s other boutiques that reflect the character of their locale, the brand’s new flagship in Lucina’s Piazza San Lorenzo is a modern take on a Domus Romana, or upper class home, in ancient Rome.

Standout feature: The narrative-driven shopping experience is a trip through time, beginning in the atrium where handbags are displayed among a 70’s Venini chandelier hanging over a wooden 17th-century Italian gaming table. In the back rooms, custom wallpaper designed by Vudafieri-Saverino—pop art interpretations of the ruins of the Neoclassic artist Piranesi—adorn a series of columns, while a VIP room stocked with midcentury handbag designs is outfitted in grey velvet armchairs and a 1950s’ FontanaArte coffee table.
